How do I create and run a Standard Contest? (quick answer)?

This answer is for use only by Gallery Hosts who are interested in holding Contests.

NOTE:  More detailed explanations and step by step procedures for the following topics can also be found in other sections of he Help Q & A.

For example, see detailed information about using the Contest Management List

or the Member Management List in other Q & A sections.

SnapBraggin offers three types of Contest Albums:

When a Host creates a Contest Album, the Host must choose whether the Contest will be a lower level (entry level) Standard Contest or a higher-level Champion or Grand Champion Contest.

Standard is the lowest, first level of Contests.

Champion is the next level up, in which the 1st place winners from selected Standard (feeder) Contests will compete.

Grand Champion is the highest level of Contest, in which the 1st place winners from selected Champion (feeder) Contests will compete.

QUICK VERSION ANSWER about holding a Standard Contest:

1.  Add one Standard Contest Album to your Gallery.

2.  While creating the Contest Album, set the entry parameters during Album Setup:

    A. Decide the judgement method, either Single Judge (one judge will choose the winners) or Member Ratings (all of the Members can rate the entries.)

    B. Indicate how many entries a Member may upload into the Contest.

    C. Indicate if the entries must have both Titles AND Descriptions.

    D. Indicate what size photos may be uploaded into the Contest.

    E. Decide how many Winning Finalists will receive awards.  (Up to 10th place is possible.)

NOTE: Start with the Contest Album in state: Closed.

3.  If the judgement method is Single Judge: Decide if a Single Judge may judge their own entries or not.

Set the option for "Hide Judges' Photos When Judging" in Gallery Management

(to do so, access your Manage This Gallery - Gallery Contest Settings page.)

4.  Give your Members permission to submit and to compete.

Use the Participation settings in the Member Management List.

5. Decide whether or not you want to screen newly-uploaded entries for content.

To set the option for Submission Approval Type (Manual vs Automatic), access your Gallery's Manage This Gallery - Gallery Membership Settings page, via the Host Tools button or menu link on your Gallery's Home page.

You can use that option to set the Approval Requirement for all members in your membership.

6.  Announce the Contest.

Provide information about:

    A. Topic (what types of photos?  For example: Butterflies)

    B.  Location (which Gallery, Group and Contest Album?)

    C.  Entry dates

    D. Judging dates

    E. Rules and instructions

    F. Restrictions, if any, such as how many entries per Member, size of files, and if the entries require both Titles AND Descriptions.

    G. And info about any Contest Entry fees that you are charging.

7.  Open the Contest (so that entries may be uploaded during the Entry Period.)

To open the Contest, change the Contest to state: Open in the Contest Management List.

8.  Close the Contest (to end the Entry Period)

To close the Contest, change the Contest to state: Closed in the Contest Management List.

9.  Decide about PA (Pending Approval) entries.

Are you screening by Manual Approval?   You can do so while your Contest is Closed.

If so, you must decide whether to Approve or Reject any PA (Pending Approval) entries.

Please remember that PA (Pending Approval) entries will not be judged or rated until you decide!

10. Start the Judging or Ratings (start the Judging Period)

To start the judging period, change the Contest to state: Judging in the Contest Management List.

11. Tell your judges or members it is time to choose the winners!

It depends on which judgement method you have selected....

If your Contest will be judged by an assigned Single Judge, the Judge can judge their assigned Contest via the For Judges menu link.

If your Contest will be judged By Member Ratings, your Members can rate the Contest via the Gallery's Home page.

12. Complete the Judging (to end the Judging Period)

Single Judge will Complete the judging of their assigned Contest.

When they Complete the judging, the Contest will be changed to state: Completed.

The Host, however, must Complete the judging of a rated Contest.

The Host must change the Contest from state: Judging to state: Completed in the Contest Management List.

13. Re-judge if desired.

The Single Judge can click the Re-judge This Contest button.

To access the button, enter a Completed Contest via the For Judges menu link.

(This will automatically change the Contest from state: Completed back to state: Judging.)

OR the Host can change the Contest from state: Completed back to state: Judging in the Contest Management List.

NOTE: Remember that, if a Contest is re-judged, the Contest must be Completed again!

14. Record the results.  (make the results official and final!)

To record the results, and make the results official and final, change the Contest to state: Recorded in the Contest Management List.

15.  Generate the Written results

Written results can be generated for one or several Contests at once in the Contest Management List.

However, you must do so, WHILE THE CONTESTS ARE STATE: RECORDED.

16.  Reset the Contest

When your Contest has been judged or rated, and recorded,

use Reset to clear away the current judging activities.

NOTE: To preserve the results, always RECORD Contests before you Reset them.
